They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but a Bruce Futterer carving can give birth to a thousand stories. This wonderful figure of a fisherman looks a lot like the hardy fishermen of the North Shore who brave the frigid waters and mighty waves to bring home the herring and other bounties of mighty Lake Superior. If you're lucky enough to have spend time along the shores of Lake Superior like Bruce did as a youth, you might be able to even conjure the scent of fresh fish and see a scale or two or twelve clinging to the figure's black oilskin boots. With a stoic Nordic expression on his face, this fisherman statue could certainly have stories to tell. Fisherman stands 5 3/4" tall. Handsigned by the artist.
Bruce teaches flat plane Scandinavian Figure Carving at North House and has been an avid carver since 1977. Since 2000, Bruce has won numerous blue ribbons at the International Carving Competition held each year in Davenport, Iowa. In 2004 his Santa Claus carving was selected as the National Grand Prize winner in the Woodcraft/Wood Carving Illustrated contests. In 2006, Bruce won Best of Show at the National Caricature Carvers Competition, and in 2005, he was awarded a Gold Medal for Scandinavian style carving from the Vesterheim Norwegian American Museum. Bruce was raised in Grand Marais and returns to the North Shore each summer.
