This game from Scandinavia which predates chess has many variations in size, materials, and structure. Norse Mythology has Hnefatafl being played by the gods since the beginning of time, and after Ragnarok, the apocalyptic end of the world, the scattered golden pieces are found once more to begin the game anew.
Handcrafted by our talented North House instructor Maeve Gathje. The figures are carved in a simplified flat plan style, gestural, and of Maeve's imagination, using only a 2" flat-plane Harley Knife. Each piece, while unique in ornamentation, began with the same nose, and is distinguished to a side of gameplay on the board by its color scheme.
The full set consists of a wooden board with two color-coded teams of six characters each plus one king. Included is documentation on the history and rules of the game.
