Jo Wood is a renowned bead artist who creates beautiful "painted" scenes from nature using glass beads and felted wool textiles. North House is so lucky to have Jo as an instructor who teaches her bead embroidery classes on campus as well as online. Our school store is fortunate to be able to offer several of Jo's pin kits!
The Pink Lady's Slipper is the state flower of Minnesota. Also known as the Showy Lady's Slipper, the flowers are spectacular if you are lucky enough to see one in bloom! The Lady Slipper Bead Embroidery Kit supplies everything needed to make one beautiful pin of wearable art. The final size of the pin is 3 1/4" tall by 1 5/8" wide. The kit includes beads, needle, thread, felted wool fabric, inner facing, backing metal pin pack plus complete directions for beading and finishing, a template and stitching diagrams. The pins are make using an applique technique on felted wool. Instructions for all the basic stitches are included. Some familiarity with bead applique will be helpful but is not necessary to complete the kit.
A beautiful orchid, the Lady's Slipper blooms in late June or early July. Found living in open fens, bogs, swamps, and damp woods where there is plenty of light, lady’s slippers grow slowly, taking up to 16 years to produce their first flowers. Since 1925 this rare wildflower has been protected by state law (it is illegal to pick the flowers or to uproot or unearth the plants).
Living and working in Northern Minnesota for over 20 years has given Jo the time to know shorelines, forest trails, and gardens where flowers gesture, trees reach, and water moves. Through her art she shares this connection to nature, the abundance, peace and beauty of this place.
