Felted Lichen Sculptures by Elise Kyllo

The latest from the magical world of our felting instructor, Elise Kyllo! Capturing the whimsical nature of lichens, here are two very different sculptures.

The Lichen Cups are approximately 9" by 9", and stand 2.5" tall. The cups are felted from green wool on the exterior and orange on the interior, with all the subtle variations lichen are known for.

The Lichen Stalks are approximately 5" by 7", and stand 7.5" tall. The felted rock base features both shallow lichens and proud stalks topped with orange.

Wool as an artistic medium entered Elise's life over twelve years ago, replacing paints, clay, and inks with a desire to create things of beauty and usefulness. As a graduate of our Artisan Development Program, she continues to create magic with felted wool. “It’s somewhat of a mystery as to how I fell in love with wool, but undoubtedly it’s the close connection to the land, the sustainability of fiber from sheep and the magical transformation of wool into practical and beautiful things requiring little more than water, soap and agitation.  Felting is completely intoxicating and never, ever dull. There is joy, playfulness, and happy surprises when working with wool, which I love to share with others.”
