Gichi Bitobig, Grand Marais
Gichi Bitobig, Grand Marais
Through the words of long-ago witness, Gichi Bitobig, Grand Marais recovers the overlooked Anishinaabeg roots and corporate origins of Grand Marais. It recalls a time when men of the American Fur Company and the Anishaabeg navigated the shifting course of progress in the northern area of the territorial region of Minnesota, negotiating the new perils and prospects of commerce's westward drift.
Author Timothy Cochrane was superintendant at Grand Portage National Monument for twenty years, where he worked closely with the Grand Portage Band of Anishinaabeg and the tribal council. His books include A Good Boat Speaks for Itself: Isle Royale Fishermen and Their Boats and Making the Carry, both published by the University of Minnesota Press, and Minong: The Good Place- Ojibwe and Isle Royale.
