NHFS Building Mittens by Kirsten Wisniewski
NHFS Building Mittens by Kirsten Wisniewski
The design of this series of mittens comes from years of knitting inspired by old world color work and construction. The idea was spurred on by North House's Cindy Lou to create a color story from North House's eclectic collection of buildings on campus.
Blacksmith Shop - stripes of grey and black
Fish House - stripes of red and brown
Green Building - stripes of green and white
Yellow Welcome Center - stripes of yellow and bark
Blue Building - stripes of blue and white
Red Building - stripes of red and white
Each set of mittens is a size 2 and fits approximately a Ladies Large or a Men's Medium.
Kirsten Wisniewski has been a knitter for 25 years, so, like the North House story, these mittens are the result of many years of experimentation and dedication to craft, with a splash of color to remind you to have some fun. Over the years mittens have been her absolute favorite thing to knit partly because they are the perfect balance of functionality with room for a little whimsy. As she says, "I also love that each pair feels personal- I try to imbue each of them with the idea, I made these to keep your hands warm."
Kirsten first came to North House as an intern in 2018, after several years working and living abroad. She has backgrounds in professional baking, sustainable agriculture, and natural fiber production, though her favorite thing to teach is baking. She is currently living in Grand Marais, where she works for WTIP and keeps quails in her own micro-farm.
