Slojd (pronounced sloyed like Lloyd) t-shirt in heavyweight 100% cotton maroon or lighter weight olive green t-shirt in a mix of 50% polyester, 25% cotton, 25% rayon. Both are silkscreened in white.

What is Slojd?  Established in 1875 by Otto Salomon, a revolutionary Swedish educator, Slojd was an education concept that there was a connection between creating things with your hands and cognitive development, that each would help improve the other.  The items Salomon's curriculum called for pupils to make were not birdhouses and toys, but practical items: rakes, hammer handles, benches, tables, spoons, etc.-appliances needed in everyday household and farm activities.  His 10-point list of aims of a Slojd education is pretty impressive:

  • instill a taste for and appreciation of work in general
  • create a respect for hard, honest, physical labor
  • develop independence and self-reliance
  • provide training in the habits of order, accuracy, cleanliness and neatness
  • train the eye to see accurately and to appreciate the sense of beauty in form
  • develop the sense of touch and give general dexterity to the hands
  • inculcate the habits of attention, industry, perseverance and patience
  • promote the development of the body's physical powers
  • acquire dexterity in the use of tools
  • execute precise work and produce useful products.

Here at North House, we like to embrace this philosophy and put a little Slojd into everything we teach.
